Trendy Engagement Rings: Right or Wrong?

by Craig

Pegging the style of your one true love is a pretty nifty trick, and one that most guys have a difficult time nailing, especially when it comes to choosing the one piece of jewelry she’ll wear for the rest of her life. And one question is particularly plaguing: should you go trendy or timeless when you purchase an engagement ring? You’re going to have to consider not only what she likes right now, but what you think she might like down the road (unless you are okay with an upgrade every few years to stay on top of current trends). However, there are a couple of tricks to help you decide whether trendy is the right choice for your special someone.

In truth, you can have the best of both worlds if you do a little research. As it happens, fashions tend to recycle themselves. If you look at wedding rings over the last hundred years, you’ll see that styles that are in vogue today have likely gone in and out of fashion several times. In fact, many rings that are considered modern and fresh have actually been recycled from decades past (although possibly tweaked slightly). Because of this “everything old is new” mentality when it comes to engagement rings, you can get a good idea of which trends seem to stick.

But what if she loves a trend that is tacky? While you can’t really go wrong with a diamond, you may be reticent to purchase a pink or yellow stone just because it is popular now. Or you might find modern settings hideous. Don’t worry too much about things like that.

In short, you really have to consider the sensibilities of your soon-to-be fiancé when you set out to buy her ring. If trendy is what she wants, then you may be best served to show you pay attention to her fashion sense. On the other hand, if you get down on one knee and offer her a gorgeous, classic, Tiffany-style solitaire, what are the odds she’ll refuse to put it on her finger?
