5 Great Songs about Diamonds

by Craig

Diamonds have become so entrenched within our culture that they can be found in songs and musicals that date back decades. Here are just a few of the best lyric representations of the gorgeous rocks that we use to frost ourselves.

1. Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend. This number from Gentleman Prefer Blondes may have been Marilyn Monroe’s most memorable movie scene (although modern viewers are more likely familiar with Madonna’s reprise of the famous pink dress from the Material Girl video). Monroe famously quipped, “A kiss on the hand may be quite continental, but diamonds are a girl’s best friend.” In short, a girl needs to get what she can before her looks start to go. Apparently, diamonds can pay for the rental, the automat, or even a lawyer.

2. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. This lilting tale of drug-tripping from the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine waxes poetic about a girl with kaleidoscope eyes, but nonetheless compares the dazzling rocks we wear on our fingers to those that populate the heavens every night.

3. Diamonds and Pearls. In this song where Prince famously spells out the word “diamond” in a sing-songy sort of rap after asking the rather ambiguous question, “If I gave you diamonds and pearls, would you be a happy boy or a girl?”, begging the question, does he know the gender of the person he’s singing to? And also, who wouldn’t be happy to get diamonds and pearls? Fittingly, the gift of diamonds and pearls in this song is equated to both giving the whole world and the gift of all his love.

4. Diamonds on the Soles of her Shoes. In Paul Simon’s tale of a rich girl and a poor boy, the former has diamonds on the soles of her shoes. As Simon puts it, “Well, that’s one way to lose those walking blues.” So is this horn-heavy, African inspired song that practically begs you to get up and move.

5. Diamonds Are Forever. This Shirley Bassey song used for the Bond film of the same name asserts that, “Diamonds are forever, they are the only way to please me.” They won’t lie and they won’t leave you, unlike double-oh-seven.

I appreciate you taking the time and energy to put this article together.
I once again find myself personally spending way too much time both reading
