How to Keep Jewelry Safe During Travel

by Craig

With the recent news of TSA agents stealing cash from checked luggage, you’re probably not too keen to place your valuable diamond jewelry in a checked bag as you would have in the past (especially considering you’re no longer allowed to lock it). And yet, you also don’t want to hold every gem you own on your person or cram it into your already overstuffed carry-on. And of course, the situation is made more complicated by the fact that you really have to keep each piece separated so they don’t become damaged, generally necessitating a bulky box of some sort. So how can you keep your jewelry safe from both scratches and sticky fingers when leaving it at home simply won’t do?

One good solution is a sectioned jewelry bag. Made of super-soft fabric designed to cocoon your precious gems, these pouches should consist of several padded compartments for your various jewels. Once you’ve packed, you can simply roll or fold the bag and easily stash the now-small bundle in your carry-on. If you can’t find this type of purse, opt instead for several small jewelry pouches (for each piece or set) and put them all into a larger, zippered sack, like a makeup bag, to keep everything together and organized. In a pinch you could even use small Ziploc bags and wrap your jewelry items in tissue for padding.

You may also be surprised by the wide variety of travel jewelry boxes available. Some of them are very compact and will even fit into a purse or laptop bag, making it easy to keep your valuables with you on the plane. But if you want to keep your jewelry close at hand, as in on your body when you travel, the best way to go about it is with a jacket that will accommodate the bulk. The many styles offered by Scottevest could provide a great solution. These pocket-laden coats are designed to house all of your electronic devices when you travel, but the roomy interior can definitely be used for other items, like a jewelry pouch (with plenty of room for your iPod, iPad, or other iDevice).

There’s no need to leave your gorgeous jewelry at home. The threat of both damage and theft can easily be negated in a number of ways that will allow you to feel comfortable with transporting your precious and valuable diamonds and gems. So when you go out for a night on the town during your vacay, you’ll have all your bling on hand and in good condition.
